THE NEW YORK COMIC CON recap

...the show was amazing.
im more tired than i have ever been in my life, aside from the second day of the con that is, i was more tired then. haha. i would get back to where i was staying so late, and look up pictures of the show and be like, i didnt see that, what the heck? marty mcflys hat from bttf2 was there!? must find it. so its definatly a different experience being in the show as opposed to visiting it, like i had the past 3 years.

i met so many amazing people, creators and fans, i think i opened alot of doors, and if not, at least 30 or so more people now have my books, and even more than that have my business cards. hopefully its another step towards getting published, allthough it did feel nice to be one of the underdogs doing EVERYTHING by ourselves, and say yes, i wrote, illustrated, printed distributed and PAID for my own table haha.
it was great to run into all the other maine guys there who i have met through other shows, and online, were really starting to build a comic community and band together to help eachother have more success…
i met alot of pros, and alot of indie creators like me, who hopefully will throw my name around enough ill know even more people at future shows, im definatly doing this one again, and the NEW chicago show they will be putting on. im starting to really believe in the con, its a crucial networking venue, its not just for selling books, but meeting the right people. and i really really feel like i did that. i only got to get away from my table 2 or 3 times really quick to give away books to some publishers ive been looking at, they remembered who i was, and shook my hand thats what its all about, all you can do is be a nice guy, and then maybe one day they will be like, oh hey, thats ben that nice guy whos been giving us free stuff for years, lets publish him haha, maybe im dreaming.

friday was wonderful, from 8 to 1 it was all proffesional only hours so i got to mix it up with everyone else exhibiting, i was honored to be asked to do commisioned drawings of their characters, and alot of us swapped or bought eachothers books. i did pretty well friday.

saturday was a madhouse, it was a sold out show, i think there was like 60,000 people there or something? too many. people are afraid to stop and open your books, theyre all trying to get in line for jim lee, WHO HAPPENED to be siting right by joel haha. lucky. but yeah saturday may have been a little too big for us little guys.

but sunday was glorious, the best day ever. everyone who had been there all weekend was walking around going SHIT i didnt buy anyting yet, forget about the recession, i need some comics! it was great. i sold alot of books, and a few pieces of original art, which is the biggest compliment, because it means youre drawing well awesome enough that someone actually wants to spend money on your stuff, or in my case, borrow money from their friends, and then pay me that money haha. they made him call them big daddy in return, and he did it, thats how much he wanted my work. so all in all, it was a wonderful experience, a really flatering show, im allready getting emails from people telling me how much they loved NATHAN THE CAVEMAN, and how it made them cry, or they have allready read it twice, its amazing, its really why we do what we do. i cant wait to get started on the next book.
thanks to everyone who wished me luck, came by the show, bought stuff, or has supported me in the past, this is what im going to do forever, and it keeps getting better. -ben

im drinking hot chocolate...

instead of coffee right now, because my blood pressure is high, and it tastes nice...

but aside from that, im busy busy getting everything together for the NYCOMICCON this weekend. im actually leaving midway through my work day on wed. setting up on thurs. and then the actual show begins on fri! i hope i dont forget anything at home.
ive been going to this show for 4 years, and this will be my first as an actual GUEST with a TABLE in the ARTISTS ALLEY, among some of my favorite artists, who i have been reading for YEARS! hopefully something happens, hopefully this is the year, 2008 was great it was the year i got my toy design job, my freelance illus jobs, and the year i finally finished NATHAN THE CAVEMAN, so hopefully 2009 is the year i find a publisher who wants to put out my next book. (if not the caveman too :)
its going to be a HUGE networking experience for me, but as wel as meeting people, im selling ALOT of stuff. heres what you will find at TABLE D4 (not the emilio movie) in the ARTISTS ALLEY.

63 copies of NATHAN THE CAVEMAN
57 copies of THE SHAPE OF SOUND
50 copies of OH MY BLACK EYE
25 copies of THE COLLECTIVE (limited edition sneak preview)

which may seem like alot of books. but im going to be selling the face off of them, because i have no way to bring them back home with me to MAINE. so help me out, tell your friends that you know to come by my table, at least to say hi. i will also be selling ORIGINAL PAGES from OH MY BLACK EYE and THE COLLECTIVE, as well as doing commisions for adults and FREE SKETCHES for kids. so its bound to be alot of fun. thanks for listening, come see me in NEW YORRRRRRKKKKKK! -ben

ALSO, got my seating arrangment and floor plan for the convention, and its great, im right across from all the marvel comics guys, and joel is right across from all the dc comics guys. SOMEONE PUBLISH MY NEXT BOOK please. so thats awesome.

AND my brother just sent me a photo of a large drawing i did for him on xmas. its awesome. still the best thing ive ever done. working on trying to figure out how to get a better scan. it has to remain flat because ive pressed pages from a RUDYARD KIPLING book of poetry, which is where the title comes from. its a story concept that my brother and i will do one day. so look out!
